The First West Virginians.
The first European settlers, in what is now West Virginia, were the first non-native people to see the large mounds created by Indian cultures of prehistory. These mounds sit on what little flat land our state has, and along the many storied rivers that shape our topography. They tell the story of the first West Virginians, stretching back to the days before recorded history.
