Israel's Netanyahu promises surprise Gaza ground invasion as world urges pause

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a televised statement on Wednesday that Israel is preparing a ground invasion of Gaza, but he declined to provide any details on the timing or other information about the operation.

"We have already killed thousands of terrorists and this is only the beginning," Netanyahu said. "Simultaneously, we are preparing for a ground invasion. I will not elaborate on when, how or how many. I will also not elaborate on the various calculations we are making, which the public is mostly unaware of and that is how things should be."

In a separate address United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres rejected accusations that he had justified Hamas attacks on Israel in his statement to the Security Council the day before, while UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Francesca Albanese condemned Hamas’ attacks and characterized Israel’s retaliation as “violence sustained by rage and fury” as “war crimes” as seen under international humanitarian law.

World leaders such as French President Emmanuel Macron said that he believed it would be an “error” for Israel to launch a “massive ground intervention” if it put civilians at risk in Gaza, while Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva said that it was a “genocide that has killed almost 2,000 children.”
